KETURAH DAVIES - GENEALOGY
This account was compiled and illustrated by John Ball. It is based largely on research conducted by
Earl Brunner of Saratoga Springs, Utah, USA, who claims descent from one of Keturah Davies's siblings.
Keturah Davies's origins
Keturah Davies was born in 1837 in the rural parish of Eglwyswrw in north Pembrokshire. She was christened at St Cristiolus's Church, Eglwyswrw (right) on 6th March 1837.
Keturah was the second child of David Davies and Sarah Davies (née Davies) who had married in 1833 at Eglwyswrw. Keturah's siblings were John, b. 1834, Jane, b. 1839, and Daniel (or David), b. 1841. Keturah's father died in January 1841 and is therefore missing from the 1841 census taken five months later (see transcript below).

Note the spelling variants of the place-name (St Dogmells for St Dogmaels) and personal name (Cetura for Keturah)
Keturah's mother, Sarah Davies, was originally from the town of Cardigan, across the county border in Cardiganshire, but only a mile or two from St Dogmaels in Pembrokeshire. By coincidence, her father's name was David Davies, the same as that of her husband. Even more curious is the fact that in 1843, two years after her husband's death, Sarah married another David Davies! Consequently, Keturah's family tree (below) contains a surfeit of David Davies's.
Keturah's step-father, Sarah's second husband David Davies, was a farmer from Llandyfriog in Cardiganshire. He and Sarah married on 6th June 1843 at St Tyfriog's Church, Llandyfriog (right). Keturah's family, headed by her step-father, appears in the 1851 census of Cardiganshire (see transcript below).

Note that Sarah's youngest son is named Daniel, whereas on the 1841 census his name is recorded as David.
As Keturah's diary testifies, she and her sister Jane emigrated to Australia in the summer of 1860. The remaining Davies family cannot be found on the 1861 census of Wales, taken in April 1861 and it is thought that they emigrated to the USA early in 1861.

Back in 1946 my Great Aunt Jennie E Jones gave me a list with the family names on it. I understood it was from the Family Bible, but when I received the Family Bible years later the information was not there. I still have the original list which includes the names of Sarah's husbands and the children with the birth dates of the children. The church records of the first family do not give the birth dates, but the church records of the second family do give the birth dates. I never found any proof of John Richard Davies's birth, but he was with the family in the 1841 census of St Dogmaels. I never found proof of birth of my great grandmother Sarah Ann Davies. A note I received from Aunt Jennie indicated the family was from Glamorgan and that they came to America when Sarah Ann Davies was five years old (this was verified in the US census records). I was not able to find the family entering the United States through 1860. I have found them in many US records after 1860. The note said the family left Wales in a hurry, as they had an uncle (I don't know whose uncle) who was a sea captain who had room to take the family to America. They knew that Keturah had died in Australia and they lost Jane's address. Keturah's diary makes it impossible for them to have left Wales before 1861. I think they left sometime before the 1861 census. The family is not in the 1861 census of Glamorgan.
