The tiny isolated village of Cilybebyll is the site of the Church of St John the Evangelist,
once the focus of religious life in the sprawling rural parish of Cilybebyll.

Above: A church has been on this site since the 12th century. The present Norman-
style building was substantially restored in 1869. It has seating capacity for 130.

Above left: The tower is the oldest part of the building.
Above right: The massive oak entrance door to the church.

The churchyard contains gravestones dating back to the 16th century, although
many are no longer legible. The examples illustrated above read:
Left: Sacred to the memory of William Dennis, only son of Richard and Jane
Francis, who died March 20 1860 aged 3 months.
Right: In memory of Daniel Smith of Cilybebyll Cottage, born Feb 15 1792,
died July 12 1863.

Above: In loving memory of Cpl. Esiah Phillips, son of John and Lizzie
Phillips..... Gassed in the War 1916....
